Wind Turbines

Guide to Wind Turbines at home

The Green Alternative
From huge offshore windfarms to small individual turbines for the home, wind energy is increasingly being seen as the way forward. With depleting fossil fuel stocks, increasing prices and greater green awareness, the public as well as politicians are looking into wind energy as a way of producing cheap energy.

How much will a wind turbine save me?
Wind turbines are available from as little as £500. However these cheap models will produce limited quantities and certainly no extra to sell on to the National Grid! There are plenty of wind turbines available for between £500 and £1500 or more. B&Q's fast selling model costs just under £1500. In addition, you will need to pay for planning permission and there may be extra installation costs

How much you will save will depend on a number of factors such as how windy your site is, how much fuel you usually consume, and the output of your wind turbine. Don't expect an instant return. Expect it to take about 10 years to cover your initial outlay

Can I get a grant?
Yes a number of grants are available, although these will not cover the whole cost. A planning application is needed in all cases except for a temporary structure, and can cost around £150, although some local authorities will refund the planning application fee for a wind turbine.
