Welcome to our new Motorbike Training Section. Here you will find all the basic information you need about learning to ride a Motorbike and also Rider Training Organisations in your area.

THE ROUTE TO PASSING YOUR BIKE TEST:

Provisional Licence. Before you ride any motorcycle you must have a provisional licence for a motorcycle or moped or posess a full car or moped licence which acts as a provisional bike licence.

A motorcycle is defined as a machine which exceeds 50cc, a moped is a machine which does not exceed 50cc.

CBT. Having obtained your provisional licence you must undertake a Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT) with an approved training body and succeed in getting a CBT certificate to validate your provisional entitlement.

Once completed you will be allowed to ride on the road with L plates, but you are not allowed to carry a passenger.

The CBT certificate is valid for two years.

Theory Test. As well as completing your CBT, you will need to pass your motorbike theory test within two years. This needs to be done before you can book a practical test.

Practical Test Options

Category P, the practical test can be taken on any moped.

Sub-category A1, the practical test must be taken on a bike of between 75cc and 125cc.

Category A, the practical test is taken on a bike of between 121cc and 125cc and capable of at least 100 kph. Having passed the standard motorcycle practical test you will be restricted for 2 years to riding a bike of up to 25kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg. After this peiod you may ride any size of bike.

Direct Access Scheme (DAS). This scheme allows riders over the age of 21 to train and apply for the "big bike" test. This avoids the two year restriction applied when passing the test on a 125cc bike.
