Cam Mem

Welcome to the CoolBlue Guide to Camera Memory. Many digital cameras come with only a small memory card and so most people are soon looking for a higher capacity card to store more pictures. The question is - how big a card do I need?

The first question you need to ask is "how many pictures do I need to store at any one time?" Probably the time when you will take most photos is on holiday. Remember that you will probably take more photos with a digital camera than a traditional film camera. If you normally take a couple of 36 exposure films, then a good rule of thumb is to double it! If you're going on a trip of a lifetime then treble it!

Format
You need to ensure you get the right kind of memory. The most common types are sd/mmc, smart media and CF (compact flash). Check out your camera Instruction Manual.

What size card shall I get?
Memory cards are measured in megabytes and gigabytes. The smallest size generally available is 32mb, but you will certainly want something more than this.

How many pictures you get on a card will depend on a number of factors. These are

Size of the Card
Resolution of your Camera
Camera setting
Compression
