You know you shouldn't drink and drive, but as you're at this site, it's probably because you want to know about the limits and penalties or you want a diy breath test kit

The Limits
The legal limits are:

80 milligrams per 100 millilitres in blood
35 micrograms per 100 millilitres in breath
107 milligrams per 100 millilitres in urine

What does that mean in practice? Well most people can safely have one drink (eg a pint of beer or glass of wine), but two drinks will take most people to around the limit. There are all sorts of ways that are alleged to enable you to drink more such as drinking milk, eating a big meal, drinking coffee afterwards, but don't rely on this.

What if You're Stopped?
You will have to give a breath test. If it proves positive you will have to go to the police station and take two further tests. You will also be given the option to take a blood or urine test. If you are over the limit you will be prosecuted. There is no point in arguing or refusing to take the breath test. It is rarely possible to claim succesfully that someone else was driving. The most likely way of avoiding being banned is through a technicality.

What is the Penalty for Drink Driving?
There is a mandatory penalty of a one year disqualification plus a fine. The maximum penalty is 6 months imprisonment and a £5,000 fine.
